In der Saison 1970/71 wurden die Ajax-Spieler zum ersten Mal Kontinentalsieger, indem sie Panathinaikos im Finale des Europapokals 1971 mit 2:0 besiegten. Nach diesem Erfolg übernahm ein neues Management unter dem Rumänen Ștefan Kovács. In Kovács' erster Saison gewann Ajax ein Triple aus Europapokal, Eredivisie und dem dritten KNVB-Pokal in Folge. In der folgenden Saison besiegte das Team Independiente und gewann den Interkontinental-Pokal 1972 und behielt seine Titel in der Eredivisie und im Europapokal, womit sie der erste Verein seit Real Madrid in den 1950er Jahren wurden, der drei Europapokale in Folge gewann.
Dieses Trikot trägt die Nummer 14, die von einem der größten Spieler der Fußballgeschichte und einem starken Verfechter der Fußballphilosophie, bekannt als Totaler Fußball, Johan Cruyff, getragen wurde.
